15th Annual Shop with a Cop

Each year in December the Winter Springs Police Department takes needy children shopping for the holidays. This is the 15th year for the Winter Springs “Shop with a Cop” program. The children arrive at the Police Department early Saturday morning and get partnered up with a Winter Springs Police officer. The children then head over to Senior Tequila to start the day with pancakes, eggs and Santa Claus. Then a lights-and-sirens-blaring caravan brings the children to Wal-Mart for a $100 shopping spree. The caravan then heads to the Civic Center, where the children and their helpers wrap their gifts. Once the wrapping is done, the children head outside, only to find a shiny new bike with their names attached to it.

Each child receives a brand new bike, helmet and bike lock courtesy of the Oviedo and Winter Springs Rotary Christmas Bike Program. There is a limited amount of space in the program each year, and we rely on the counselors at the elementary schools to refer children in need. No matter what struggles these children are facing at home, during “Shop with a Cop”, they can put those issues aside, if only for a moment.

If you are interested in donating to the “Shop with a Cop” program please contact Cpl. Cavanagh at 407-327-7565 or jcavanagh@winterspringsfl.org. Donations must be received by December, 06, 2013.
