Do you think you have a leak?

If you think you may have a leak, start by turning all of the water off in your house. Don't forget the ice maker, water softener, water heater, etc. Go outside and locate your meter. It is underground with a plastic cover, typically at the front edge of your property near the sidewalk. The meter may be covered by a couple of inches of dirt. Once you have located the meter, look to see if the meter is running by noting the flow indicator, which could be a small dial, a triangle, or a wheel. If it is moving, water is running somewhere. There could be a leak in the house or from the meter to the house. To test this, locate the shut off valve that shuts the flow of water off from the main supply to your house. It is usually located on the outside of the house or in the garage. If you turn it off and the meter is still running, then the leak is between the meter and the shutoff valve at your house. The leak will need to be located and repaired as soon a possible. If the leak is inside, systematically check all water using devices in your home to see if you can detect a leak. If you can not, a plumber may be needed.
