The Florida "Move Over Act" was signed into law and became effective July 1, 2002. The purpose of the law is to protect law enforcement, fire, and other emergency personnel while parked along side of the road during the scope of legitimate business with emergency lights flashing.
According to the statute, when drivers approach law enforcement or other emergency vehicles with lights flashing, they must vacate the lane closests to the stopped emergency vehicle. If drivers are traveling on a two lane street or cannot safely move over, motorists must drop their speed to 20MPH less than the posted speed limit. If the posted speed limit is 20MPH or less, drivers must reduce their speed to 5 MPH.
