September 2019: Disaster Supply Kits

Checklist

The Winter Springs Police Department reminds you to get a disaster supply kit ready for the hurricane season! Hurricane Dorian was a perfect example of why we should all be prepared BEFORE disaster strikes. Prepping your kit now will save you the pain of searching grocery stores for water or service stations for gas.

Food and Water 

  • Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation 
  • Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food. A two-week supply would be best.
    • Manual can opener
  • Foods for individuals with dietary restrictions (i.e. infants, elderly, etc.)
  • Canned or boxed juices or energy drinks
  • Snack foods
  • Infant formula
  • Cooking tools and fuel
  • Mess kits, paper cups, plates, and plastic utensils, paper towels 
  • Pet food and extra water for your pet

First Aid Kit and Medications

  • Two-week supply of prescription medications
  • First aid kit
  • First aid book or information
  • Over-the-counter medications
  • Sunscreen and mosquito repellent

Clothing and Important Documents

  • Complete change of clothing for each person including a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, and sturdy shoes.
  • Raincoat and boots
  • Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person
  • Important family documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification papers, and bank account records in a waterproof, portable container.

Tools and Other Supplies

  • Cash or traveler’s checks and change
  • Prescription glasses
  • Local map of shelters
  • Fire Extinguisher
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
  • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  • Disinfectant and household bleach
  • Feminine supplies and personal hygiene items
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Matches in a waterproof container
  • Needle and thread
  • Paper and pencil
  • Baby diapers and supplies
  • Books, games, puzzles or other activities for children
  • List of emergency phone numbers
