November 2022: Drowsy Driving Prevention

Drowsy Driving Prevention- November 2022

Drowsy Driving Prevention

With the holidays around the corner, more people will be on the roads traveling to visit with friends and family. With long drives comes an inherent risk of becoming drowsy. Drowsy driving is a significant contributor to motor vehicle collisions. According to the Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA), in 2017, drowsy driving caused at least 91,000 crashes, resulting in about 50,000 injuries and 800 fatalities.

Tips to avoid drowsy driving

  • Break the trip up into smaller segments
  • Avoid driving during the drowsiest times of day
  • Get a good night’s sleep
  • Budget time for rest
  • Avoid alcohol and other sedatives
  • Split driving duties between you and your travel companion

Drowsy driving is a form of impaired driving. If you feel yourself becoming drowsy while driving, look for the nearest opportunity to stop and rest.

Shop With A Cop

The Winter Springs Police Department is hosting Shop with a Cop.

This program helps spread Christmas joy to children in need and their families. Our department accepts donations to allow children to shop for gifts for themselves and their families. The children are also given a hearty breakfast with a special visitor before they start shopping. Our goal is to assist families and provide positive interactions with police officers.

Each child is nominated by their school guidance counselor, police officers, or church community leaders. The number of children helped is based on the funds raised by community donations.

With your continued help and support, we can make a difference in the lives of local children and families. If you are interested in participating, please get in touch with me at tballew@wintersprinsgfl.org or at (407)-327-8976. We are working toward a November 15 deadline to collect all donations and begin shopping for our families. Should you desire to donate by check, please make checks payable to:
