October 2020: Walkers and Cyclists Safety

Cyclist

This is for all the daily walkers and joggers, and the newcomers who may venture out as fall brings in cooler temperatures, mid 80’s. Here are a few safety tips to keep you in mind.

  • Have an exercise partner.
  • Keep the music volume down and use only one earbud, so you can hear your surroundings.
  • Switch up the routine. Following the same route each day can make you an easy target for potential attacks.
  • Wear reflective clothing for better visibility.

Whether you are an avid weekend warrior or a novice bicyclist, know the rules to safely navigate the roads.

  • In Florida, bicycles have the same rights as cars on the road.
  • Cyclists are required to obey all traffic laws while riding in the street, including red lights, stop signs, use of lights at night, etc.
  • Ride in the same direction as traffic while staying on the right side of the road.
  • Share the road! This goes both ways for drivers and cyclists. Cyclists have the right to be in traffic lanes but should let motor vehicles pass when safe.
  • Cyclists may not ride more than two abreast except on paths or parts of roadways set aside for the exclusive use of bicycles.
  • Cyclists riding two abreast on roadways may not impede traffic when traveling at less than the normal speed and shall ride within a single lane. However, reducing a motorist’s speed for a few seconds until it is safe to pass does not constitute an impediment or an obstruction.
  • Cyclists on the sidewalk are legally considered “pedestrians” and must follow all pedestrian laws.
  • Ensure you’re wearing a properly fitted helmet, and don’t forget to check the expiration date.
  • Equip your bike with lamps on the front and back.
  • Do not wear headphones or earbuds except in one ear! It’s illegal and can distract you, leaving you unaware of traffic around you (hearing aids are okay).
