1,4-Dioxane

Recently it was discovered that a toxic industrial chemical, 1,4-dioxane, had been found to have infiltrated the Floridan Aquifer, our region's source of drinking water.

Well Testing

On July 31, 2023, Winter Springs sampled its potable water systems within the City for traces of 1,4-dioxane.

Water samples were taken from all three Winter Springs Water Treatment Plants at the wells and from the points of entry(POE) and sent to a lab for analysis.

On August 11, 2023, the City received the results from the lab and was informed that the levels were found to be non-detectable (ND)

Rest assured, safeguarding the City of Winter Springs's drinking water is of the highest importance to the City and staff, and we will continue to work with state and federal regulators to research and adopt protective standards to ensure our drinking water remains safe for our residents.

Moving forward, City staff have engaged a consultant to assist with developing short-and-long-term plans for sampling, monitoring, and reporting of 1,4-dioxane.

Every year the City of Winter Springs potable water systems are sampled and tested for contaminants based on monitoring requirements established by the EPA and Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

In 2022, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) performed its annual Source Water Assessment of our system and found the drinking water we produce meets or exceeds all Federal and State water quality regulations.

If you have questions about these reports or your water utility, please contact the Winter Springs Utilities Customer Service at 407-327-1800.

All public water systems in Florida are required to perform routine testing to ensure that they meet state drinking water standards, private well owners are responsible for ensuring that their own well water is safe to drink.

More information on private well testing can be found at the Florida Department of Health website.
